Summary view
A one-day Delhi plan has to respect the clock more than the map. Jama Masjid takes visitors from 07:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 01:30 PM to 06:30 PM, and the Red Fort opens 09:30 AM to 04:30 PM and is closed on Mondays.1,3 Those hours push Old Delhi into the morning and leave New Delhi for the afternoon and evening.
The route is simple: the old city before noon, lunch, then the monuments and avenues of the capital until the light fades. Our Viator full-day tour follows that order, starting with Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and Jama Masjid, then the spice market, lunch, Humayun's Tomb, Agrasen ki Baoli and the Lotus Temple. A private car links the stops, so you spend the hours on sightseeing instead of waiting for taxis.
The result is a day of 7 hours at most on the listing, with the version you pick setting the length. A shorter half day trims it to one side of the city. If you only have a morning, choose the old city. If you only have an afternoon, choose the new. Either way, book the version first and let the rest of the plan follow it, because the opening hours leave little room for improvising.

Hours are taken from the Ministry of Tourism pages; check them on the day, since they can change for holidays.1
Begin at 07:00 AM if you can, since Jama Masjid and Raj Ghat both open at that hour.1,7 Our listing starts the day at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, which is open 24 hours, with a 30-minute stop.8 Then comes Jama Masjid, with 60 minutes, which is enough for the courtyard, the arcades and the view across the district.
After the mosque, a tuk-tuk ride through the Old Delhi bazaars is part of the listing, and the spice market follows. The spice market gets 30 minutes in the itinerary, long enough to walk the main lane, smell the sacks and buy a small bag of something to take home. The ride also gives you a view of the street life that a car window hides, so keep a hand free for the camera.
The Red Fort is passed by without a stop on our tour, which saves the time a proper visit needs. If you want the interior, give it its own block of time, and check its hours and its Monday closure first.3 Dress for the heat, carry water and take a light scarf for the shrine. Whichever way you choose, the fort is worth seeing from the road at least once, with its long red wall and the flag on the bastion.
Where the minutes go
Minutes are the figures in the itinerary lines of the Viator listing; driving time between stops is not listed.
Lunch is the hinge of the day. The itinerary allows 45 minutes for it. Meals are not included in the price, so budget for lunch and ask the guide where the kitchen is clean and busy. Eat early enough that the afternoon starts before the light turns harsh, and keep the pace relaxed so the second half of the day is as good as the first.
The drive from the old city to the monuments of the south gives you a rest, and a chance to see Parliament House, the President's House and the avenue leading to India Gate from the car. Treat this stretch as a pause. A bottle of water is supplied, and a cold drink at lunch resets you for the afternoon.
Use the break to check what is left on your list. If you are running late, drop Agrasen ki Baoli, which holds only a 30-minute stop, before you drop a bigger monument. A private guide will make that call on the day, and a flexible driver keeps the timetable honest. Aim to leave the table with a clear plan for the rest of the afternoon, including the time you want to be at India Gate.

Humayun's Tomb comes first and holds the longest stop of the afternoon, 60 minutes. It opens from sunrise to sunset, so the afternoon light is available.11 The tomb was commissioned in 1558 and is the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent.14 Walk the garden axis slowly, since the long channels and the symmetrical beds are a large part of the design.
Next is Agrasen ki Baoli, a stepwell 60 metres long with 108 steps, then the Lotus Temple, with 45 minutes in the itinerary.15 The Lotus Temple opens 09:30 AM - 07:00 PM in summer and 09:30 AM - 05:30 PM in winter, which makes it the stop that sets your finishing time in the cooler months.6 The baoli is a short stop with many steps, so wear shoes with grip, and keep the Lotus Temple queue in mind when you plan the order.
On a Monday the temple is closed and Qutub Minar replaces it on our tour. That swap keeps the afternoon full, and the tower is described by the Ministry of Tourism as 72.5 meters tall.16 Check the day before you book, and ask the operator to confirm the final order. That is a neat answer to a closed gate, and it explains why a private guide is worth having on a day when the plan has to change.
The day in order
07:00 AM
It opens 07:00 AM, closes 12:00 PM and reopens 01:30 PM.1
Morning
30 minutes at the shrine and 60 at Jama Masjid.
Late morning
About 30 minutes among the stalls.
Midday
The itinerary allows 45 minutes.
Afternoon
60 minutes at the tomb, 30 at the baoli.
Late afternoon
45 minutes; it closes 05:30 PM in winter.6
Dusk
The arch is floodlit after sunset.2
The day ends best at India Gate, which is open throughout the day and floodlit after sunset.17,2 The 42-meter-high archway looks different when the lights come on, and the lawns around it fill with families.18 There is no ticket to buy, and the stop costs only time. Sit on the grass for a while, watch the light change on the sandstone and let the day settle before you head back to the hotel.
Next door, the National War Memorial has no entry fee and is best visited in the evening, when the daily Retreat Drill takes place.19,20 It opens 09:00 AM - 07:30 PM from November to March and 09:00 AM - 08:30 PM from April to October, so check the season before you plan a late arrival.9 Walk the circles at a gentle pace and arrive before the drill begins if you want a place with a view of the ceremony.
Our listing passes by India Gate rather than stopping, so this evening stop is something you can add on your own or ask the guide about when you book. A short taxi or app ride from the hotel brings you back here after the tour finishes, and the drop-off covers the airport or any hotel in the pick-up area.

Delhi's magic unfolds in the cooler months (from October to March) when the weather is perfect for exploring.
A one-day plan means dropping something. The easiest cuts are the stops that need their own half day. The Red Fort interior covers 255 acres, Akshardham closes on Mondays and the National Museum holds over 200,000 artworks.21,4,22 None of the three fits into a rushed loop. Choose the cuts in advance, so that on the day you spend your energy on the stops you chose, not on arguing with yourself.
Qutub Minar is a sensible cut if you are staying in the north, and it is a worthwhile swap if you have time and a car to reach it.16 The Lodhi Garden and Dilli Haat suit a slow evening better than a tight schedule: Dilli Haat opens at 11:00 AM and closes at 09:00 PM, which leaves room for dinner there.10
If you have more time, use it for the stops you cut. The page on two or three days in Delhi spreads them over a gentler pace. If you plan to visit Delhi in one day, keep the monuments that are closest together and let the rest go without regret. A flexible plan also lets the guide swap a closed site for an open one on the spot, which is where the private format earns its price.
Season changes how much you can fit. The Ministry of Tourism says Delhi is at its best in the cooler months from October to March.12 The Safdarjung station records an average high of 40 °C in May and 20.3 °C in January, and 236 mm of rain in July.23,23,23 In the hottest weeks, start at first light and rest at midday.
The full-day tour is a private tour priced per person, from $37, with entry fees, a guide, a car and water included and tips and meals excluded. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before departure. Prices on this page are from prices, so the total depends on the version, the date and the size of your party.
Carry a photo ID on your phone for monument entry and keep the confirmation handy. Book the date that suits the closed days on your list, and ask the operator whether the route can adapt if you decide on the day to swap a stop. A short day needs a good plan, one that feels full without feeling rushed.
