Summary view
The Golden Triangle is the best-known route in northern India, and it joins three cities: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The national tourism board describes Jaipur as one of its three points, a triangle that comprises Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, and says Agra sits on the same tourist circuit.1,4 The route is a loop, so most itineraries begin and end in Delhi.
Each corner gives a different kind of sightseeing. Delhi is a capital with eight historic cities layered together and 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites on its skyline.5,6 Agra has the Taj Mahal and 3 UNESCO sites of its own.7,8 Jaipur adds palaces, a UNESCO-listed fort and an observatory.9,10 A loop therefore gives you a monument city, a mausoleum city and a palace city.
This page looks at the loop from the Delhi end, because that is where most travellers arrive and where they will be best placed to decide how many days to keep at the start. The Taj Mahal itself, the taxi between Delhi and Agra and the Agra to Jaipur road each get their own pages on sister sites; this one is about how the pieces fit together and how long the whole loop should be.
Loop lengths
| Length | What the listing says | Group size | Guides |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days (Viator) | 72 hours by car across the three cities | Private | Nine languages |
| 3 days, hotels | Private, hotels included in the title | Private | English and 8 more |
| 4 days, luxury | Small group | Up to 10 | English, Spanish, French, German |
| 5 days | Private | Up to 15 | English and 4 more |
| 6 days | Delhi, Agra and Jaipur | Not stated | English and Hindi |
Each row is that listing's own wording; prices vary by date and group, so check the booking page.
Start with Delhi, because it is the shortest part to plan and the easiest to cut. The Old & New Delhi tour sold on this site lasts from 4 hours to 7 hours depending on the version, with a half day for New Delhi, a half day for Old Delhi and a full day for both. For a loop that is mostly about Agra and Jaipur, one day in Delhi can cover the heart of both halves of the capital.
If you have more time, the national tourism board names a lot to see: the Red Fort, built in the 17th century, the Qutub Minar, a 12th-century tower, and Humayun's Tomb, a 16th-century garden mausoleum.14,15,16 With a second day you can add Lodhi Garden and Sunder Nursery, with their greenery and picnic-friendly lawns.17 With a third day you can add food, markets and a museum.
The reverse choice also works. Many travellers do the Agra and Jaipur legs first and keep their Delhi days for the end, when they are tired and want to shop, eat and walk rather than rush. Whichever way you go, remember that the arrival flight or train rarely lands at a convenient hour, so do not plan a heavy sightseeing morning on the day you arrive.
Heat on the loop
Delhi is the NOAA Safdarjung station average daily high; Agra and Jaipur are the highest figures of the ranges on the national tourism board's pages, so compare the pattern and not the decimals.18,19,20,18,21,22
The private loops listed for this route, which work like a Delhi to Jaipur trip package, come in four lengths. A 3-day private tour with hotels, a 4-day luxury tour, a 5-day tour and a 6-day tour are each listed with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and guides are available in English in all four. The Viator 3-day private tour by car covers 72 hours across Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.
Group size varies. The 4-day luxury tour is a small group limited to 10 participants, and the 5-day tour is limited to 15 participants. The 6-day tour lists guides in English and Hindi only, while the 3-day tour with hotels lists nine guide languages, among them Japanese, Portuguese and Hindi. Read the listing for the version you choose, since inclusions differ.
On reviews, the 3-day Viator tour has 1,282 ratings averaging 4.9 and is listed from $99. The 3-day tour with hotels has 359 ratings averaging 4.7, the 4-day tour has 297 averaging 4.8, the 5-day tour has 269 averaging 4.8 and the 6-day tour has 195 averaging 4.9. Ratings tell you about the operator more than about the length, so choose the length first and then compare the listings.

The shortest sensible loop is 3 days, and it is tight. Day 1 is Delhi, day 2 is the road to Agra and the Taj Mahal, and day 3 is the road on to Jaipur. Jaipur is 5 hours from Delhi by road, so a day that includes the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort and ends in Jaipur is a long one.2 The Delhi Tourism Citizen Charter, an older document, lists an Agra-Jaipur tour of 3 days among its regular tours.12
In Agra, the national tourism board names the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, a red sandstone Mughal fort near the Taj Mahal gardens, as the headline sights.7,11 The Viator Taj day by train gives 180 minutes at the Taj Mahal and 60 minutes at Agra Fort. On a loop you will have a similar window, so decide in advance whether you want the sunrise slot or the afternoon.
In Jaipur, the shortest visit covers the Hawa Mahal, built in 1799, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar, whose 19 instruments were built between 1728 and 1734.13,10 The Viator Jaipur day gives 60 minutes at Jaigarh Fort, 30 at the Hawa Mahal, 60 at the City Palace, 30 at the Jal Mahal and 60 at Jantar Mantar. These are the building blocks of a Jaipur day on the loop.
Three days
Start
Spend it on the capital: the city tour lasts 4 to 7 hours.
Next
Then
An older Delhi Tourism charter lists an Agra-Jaipur tour of 3 days.12
Last
The Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar anchor the day.13,10
Back
Jaipur is 5 hours from Delhi by road.2
More days give the loop room to breathe. A longer plan can hold extra nights in Delhi, and a 5-day plan can add Fatehpur Sikri, an abandoned city built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.23 The 6-day Delhi, Agra and Jaipur tour has room for slower mornings and the evening light.
Delhi Tourism itself shows how far the loop can stretch. Its Citizen Charter lists a seasonal Delhi-Jaipur-Udaipur package of 5 days for autumn and winter, and an Agra-Jaipur tour of 3 days among its regular tours.26,12 That charter is an older document, so check what is on offer now; the pattern, though, shows a Rajasthan extension as a common next step.
The loop is for travellers who like variety. Think about your energy: a long day of driving is followed by a long day of sightseeing, and without a rest day the third monument of the morning blurs into the last. If you want a slower trip, choose a longer loop and fewer stops per day, or keep one open day in the middle to do nothing at all.

one of the three points of the Golden Triangle, which comprises Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur
Delhi Tourism says the best time to visit Delhi is from October to March.3 The loop confirms why. The national tourism board gives Agra a January range of 4.1 to 27.7 °C and Jaipur a January range of 3.5 to 27.6 °C, while the NOAA Safdarjung station in New Delhi shows an average daily high of 20.3 °C in January.19,20,18 Winter days are mild, and the early mornings are cool.
Summer is the hard part. Agra reaches a May range of 20.5 to 46.1 °C and Jaipur 21.5 to 44.8 °C, against an average daily high of 40 °C in May at the Safdarjung station.21,22,18 Monuments are open courtyards, and a loop in May means sightseeing before the late morning and a long rest in an air-conditioned room around midday.
The monsoon brings the opposite problem. The Safdarjung station records 236 mm of precipitation in July and 262 mm in August, and Agra's July range is 21.7 to 41.3 °C.18,18,27 Roads are slower and some outdoor sights are wet. October and November are good choices for a shoulder season, with Agra's November range at 9.4 to 33.2 °C.28
Book the long parts first, and if a Jaipur trip from Delhi is only a single day, choose the car day with the guide. Private loops depend on a driver and a guide, and the listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so the risk of locking dates early is small. Book your arrival and departure flights so that they leave a free day at each end of the loop, and keep a little slack for delays on the road.
Compare loops on the same terms. Ask whether hotels are included, how many guide languages are listed, what the group size limit is and how many days you spend in each city. A cheaper loop with fewer nights in Delhi may leave you with less time than you think, and a longer loop is not always better if it repeats the same kinds of sight.
Keep a Delhi day for the end if your flight leaves late. The metro serves Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida, and the airport lists cab, metro and private car as ways to commute to it.29,24 If you need to stay near the airport or the station for an early start, plan the night before accordingly. The stay and planning page on this site covers areas to sleep and the practical details.
